What Is a Root Canal?
Root canal therapy, usually just referred to as a “root canal,” is a treatment that’s designed to treat, restore, and protect infected teeth. Tooth infections occur when an oral injury destroys the outer layer of the tooth, or when a serious cavity eats through the outside of the tooth.
When this happens, the nerve-filled pulp that supports the tooth becomes infected with bacteria and will begin to decay and die. This causes a lot of pain and discomfort, as well as tooth sensitivity. Infected teeth are the cause of most toothaches.
If you do not get treatment, the infection will continue to get worse. Eventually, the tooth will die and will fall out of your mouth, or it will need to be extracted by Dr. William.
Root canal therapy is used to restore the tooth and prevent it from dying. In this process, Dr. William opens up the tooth, cleans it out, then restores the interior and exterior of the tooth to eliminate bacteria and protect the tooth.
The Root Canal Process
The root canal process is quite simple to understand, and despite how popular culture portrays root canal therapy, it’s completely painless. To begin the process, Dr. William will clean the treatment site and numb your mouth with a spray-based anesthetic and a numbing needle.
When your mouth is fully numb, Dr. William will use a dental drill to gently remove any damaged enamel from your tooth. Then, she will make a small hole in the surface of the tooth, providing access to the inside of the tooth.
After this, Dr. William will use a variety of different dental tools to remove infected and decayed pulp from the inside of the tooth. Once this is done, she will flush it with sanitizer and fill it up with an inert material that will replace the now-missing pulp.
Do Root Canals Hurt?
No. Your root canal treatment will be completely pain-free. Dr. William is an experienced endodontist and has provided pain-free root canal treatment to hundreds of patients throughout her career. You’ll be in good hands at Lakewood Smiles.
